A blower door test is one of the most effective ways to measure a home or building’s air leakage, energy efficiency, and overall building performance. It helps identify gaps in the building envelope where conditioned air is escaping and outside air is entering. When the thermal boundary and air barrier are not continuous, a building can lose heat, waste energy, and become less comfortable year-round.

At Minnesota Spray Foam and Coatings, we use blower door testing as part of our diagnostic process to evaluate how well a home is sealed before and after insulation or weatherization work is completed. While insulation is important, it is only part of the solution. Without proper testing, hidden air leaks can continue to reduce efficiency and increase heating and cooling costs.

A blower door test measures the amount of uncontrolled airflow moving through cracks, gaps, and penetrations in the home. By improving air tightness, homeowners can reduce energy loss, improve indoor comfort, and gain better control over ventilation. An airtight home does not mean a lack of airflow — it means airflow is controlled and intentional, rather than wasted through leaks.

When combined with diagnostic tools such as thermal imaging, blower door testing can help pinpoint areas of heat loss so improvements can be targeted where they will have the greatest impact. That is why Minnesota Spray Foam and Coatings performs diagnostic testing both before and after the work is done, helping ensure your insulation and air sealing upgrades deliver real, measurable results.
